Invite link says persona mismatch

Fix a firm connect, claim, or join link that is refused because the account opening it is the wrong persona.

A firm invite link was refused with a persona-mismatch message. This happens when the account opening the link is the wrong kind for that link.

Why it happens

Every account is one persona, set once and fixed: a business owner or an accountant. Links are keyed to a persona.

  • Connect and claim links (to bring a business into a firm) are for business accounts.
  • Firm join links (to add staff to a firm) are for accountant accounts.

An accountant account cannot claim or connect a client business, and a business account cannot accept a firm join link. Because the persona is fixed for an email address, signing in again with the same email does not change it.

Fix

A client opening a connect or claim link. Make sure they open it with a business account. If the email they used is already an accountant account, they need a different email to sign up as a business.

A colleague opening a firm join link. Make sure they open it with an accountant account, or a fresh email they can register as an accountant.

You cannot convert a business account into an accountant account, or the reverse. Pick the right persona at sign-up, and use separate email addresses if one person needs both.

Confirm

Reopen the link with the correct persona. A connect or claim link should link the business to the firm, and a join link should add the person as firm staff.
